bag, you old

bag, you old
A contemptuous and insulting term used to a middle-aged or older woman. The earlier term was ‘baggage’. This is one of those instances where ‘old’ is itself used insultingly. In Festival, by N.J.Crisp, occurs: ‘Oh, shut up, you hypocritical old bag’, addressed by one woman to another. There is a rather similar ‘Shut up, you horrid old Austrian bag’ addressed to an Austrian woman by an Englishman in The Half Hunter, by John Sherwood.
